Intensive Arabic Language in Amman – Spring (LEV/LANG/ Spring)

This twelve-week, intensive course places equal emphasis on learning Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and Jordanian Dialect (‘Amiya). It will be 12 weeks of intensive language study.

Based on a placement test, we design a curriculum appropriate for your language level and learning goals. Driven by our philosophy of helping students sharpen their communicative skills and functional linguistic competencies, we encourage learners to activate the vocabulary, basic structures, and common expressions of ‘Amiya and MSA that they already know and will acquire in an environment of constant practice. In this way, students learn to advance their Arabic skills through the consistent creation of linguistic outputs, a process that simultaneously acquaints them with the diglossic nature of the language.

The course consists of 25 lessons, each lasting 50 minutes. Fifteen of the lessons focus on MSA and ten on Jordanian Dialect. Centered around thematic blocs covering contemporary topics and debates in Jordanian and Arab societies, the lessons activate and advance the four domains of linguistic proficiency: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Taken from original Arabic-language source material, each lesson features a text or multimedia clip that students first study with the help of the teacher. In a second step, the lesson moves towards applying knowledge gleaned from the text in the form of spoken and/or written output. Assignments involving these linguistic outputs place an emphasis on encouraging interactions between the student and native Arabic speakers, both in and out of the classroom. This combination of authentic, culturally rooted source material and learning the language through practice stems from Levant's philosophy of instilling in students three interconnected competencies: knowledge of language, ability to communicate, and understanding of culture.
